DescriptionLoosely based on the 1896 opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini, Luigi Illica, and Giuseppe Giacosa, RENT tells the story of young artists struggling to survive and create a life in Lower Manhattan's East Village during the AIDS epidemic. RENT opened January 26, 1996, off-Broadway, exactly one hundred years after La Bohème’s premiere. Sadly, Jonathan Larson, the show’s creator, died the night before opening. The show transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996, and closed September 7, 2008. Among its many awards, RENT won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Musical.
RENT was originally produced in New York by New York Theatre Workshop and on Broadway by Jeffrey Seller, Kevin McCollum, Allan S. Gordon and New York Theatre Workshop. Book, music and lyrics were by Jonathan Larson with musical arrangements by Steve Skinner and original concept/additional lyrics by Billy Aronso.
RENT is produced by special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), www.mtishows.com.
